Old Svrljig Fortress on the rugged cliffs
Old Svrljig Fortress is located in the village of Niševac, which I've already written about. The spectacular nature and surroundings, unlike anything you'll find in many other parts of Serbia, are sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits. Interestingly, one of the earliest scholarly descriptions of the fortress dates back to 1866, when it was documented by Stevan Mačaj, a doctor from the Knjaževac District. It's sad to see how dramatically the fortress has changed in just 150 years. It once had impressive towers reaching heights of 10 and 12 meters, but today only the remains of its walls have survived. The fortress itself was built on a rugged, towering rock formation rising more than 100 meters above the surrounding terrain, making it probably one of the most inaccessible fortresses ever built in Serbia. Today, the trail leading to the fortress approaches from the northwest. It's quite steep but well-marked, so I recommend being careful on the way down, especially considering the terrain.
