Golubac Fortress – A Stunning Medieval Fortress Overlooking the Danube

I visited Golubac Fortress on a day trip along the Danube, and it left an impression. The fortress sits right where the river narrows into the Đerdap Gorge, with tall stone towers built into the cliffs above the water. It’s one of the most photographed landmarks in Serbia, and for a good reason, it looks incredible from just about every angle. The place has a long history, once guarding the Danube and switching hands between empires for centuries. One of the local legends tells of a cruel Ottoman commander who fell in love with a beautiful girl named Golubana; when she refused to join his harem, he had her chained to a rock below the fortress as punishment. That rock was named “Baba-kaj,” meaning “repent” and the fortress itself became known as Golubac in her memory. If you plan to explore the fortress itself, especially the upper levels, don’t forget to bring your hiking boots, the paths can be steep and uneven.
