Srećkovo Vrelo in the village of Kamenica near Niš

When someone mentions the village of Kamenica, the first thing that comes to mind is Srećkovo Vrelo, or Devojačko Ždrelo as it was once known, and not so much because of the spring itself, but because of the nature surrounding it and the combination of rocky terrain, water, and traces of ancient times. The spring is located in a small gorge, and it was from this very place that ancient Naissus was supplied with water through a Roman aqueduct. The Romans built a reservoir where the water emerges, and from there they carried the water towards Niš through ceramic pipes. The pipes also bore the mark EG VII, which is associated with the Legio VII Claudia. From Devojačko Ždrelo, the aqueduct followed the Kamenička River, passing by Kamenica, Čegar, and Donji Matejevac, all the way to the area of Jagodin Mala. So when you visit this place, keep all of this in mind, because you will look at the mountains, the road, and the nature surrounding this now well-known spring near Niš in a slightly different way.
